    Company: Ames Tribune
    Position: Seeking Sports Editor
    Location: Ames, Iowa
    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: $35,000 to $40,000
    Ad Expires: May 23, 2007
    Job ID: 767405
    Website: http://amestrib.com

    Description:
The Ames Tribune, a smart daily in an idyllic Midwestern university town, seeks a sports editor to continue our tradition of second-to-none coverage in print and online. The Tribune is uniquely positioned. We serve a demanding readership with coverage of Big 12 nationally ranked teams, along with intensely local prep sports with an equally demanding base. We are a 12,000 circulation, six-day a week newspaper in Ames, Iowa, home of the Iowa State University Cyclones. And we cover 12 school districts in Mid-Iowa. We are small but mighty. A half hour north of the largest daily in the state, and in a town with a strong campus daily, this is a highly competitive sports market. As a mark of our commitment to go head-to-head, we added a Sunday edition in 2005, eliminating our weaker Monday paper. We’ve continued to rethink our advance and coverage packages, including a popular Game Day feature, to meet readers’ expectations. Our company currently is establishing news service to share coverage among all papers in our group, emphasizing Web and wire continuous reporting. The successful candidate will be able to deliver alternate story forms, off-cycle, continuous reporting, database options, compelling reads and nontraditional thinking. Send cover letter, resume and clips to David Kraemer, Editor, Ames Tribune, 317 Fifth St., Ames, IA 50010, or to dkraemer@amestrib.com.

How does this qualify as a "smart daily?"

You wouldn't ask that if you'd seen the Wonderlic scores of all the other papers in Middle Iowa.

Damn, you stole mine. And why do I have a feeling pro wrestling will become more of a presence?

Wasn't this job formerly held by John Akers (or Acres, can't remember which) of the San Jose Mercury News?

I wouldn't laugh too much at this one. Less than 10 years ago it won a Pulitzer when Michael Gartner owned it. One of its former reporters, Adam Thompson, went to Denver and covered the Nuggets for several years and now covers sports business for the Wall Street Journal.

That said, it's not as good as it was in the late 1990s, but it's better than many papers triple its circulation size. The paper covers Big 12 sports religiously, not one of the those half-assed papers that go to the home games and hope for a call from the SID on the road.
