The Polk County Itemizer-Observer newspaper in Dallas, Ore., part of Eagle Newspapers Inc., is accepting applications for a full-time sports editor.

This is a very important position in our newsroom. It is a one-person department covering four high schools, a growing NCAA Division II university, and an assortment of community events ranging from youth activities and competitive fun runs to outdoor recreation and peewee rodeo.

The qualified candidate must have a sports journalism background and be an energetic, self-motivated team player with solid writing, reporting and time management skills. Knowledge of AP style required. Photography skills, owning your own camera equipment and the ability to paginate lively and visually appealing pages using Quark Xpress is also required. Professional newspaper experience preferred, but we’ll consider a recent college graduate with impressive credentials and an internship to boot. We offer a competitive salary and benefit package that includes vacation, health coverage, life insurance and 401(k) plan.

This is not your typical 9-to-5 job. It’s a great career opportunity that requires regular evening and weekend work. If your idea of how to handle the job is to sit behind a desk and talk to coaches on the phone once a week, this isn’t the position for you. We’re looking for a committed individual who will continue to make our sports coverage shine through vivid feature stories, detailed personality profiles, analysis of local sports issues, and lively game coverage. You also must be adept at using social media, including Facebook and Twitter. Reliable transportation is a must. Motor vehicle driving record check as well as pre-employment drug screening required. EOE. You’ll get our attention faster if you already live in Oregon or a neighboring state. No relocation reimbursement or assistance with moving expenses is available.

The Itemizer-Observer has recently won several General Excellence awards from the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspaper Contest and the Oregon/Southwest Washington Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Our office is in Dallas, in the heart of the Willamette Valley. We’re minutes from the State Capitol in Salem and Western Oregon University in Monmouth, a short drive to the Oregon Coast and Portland, and right in the middle of Oregon’s wine country.

To be considered, please send your resume, references, a letter explaining your vision for our sports pages and a variety of recent writing and page design samples to: Kurt Holland, managing editor, Polk County Itemizer-Observer, P.O. Box 108, Dallas, OR 97338; email to ionews@polkio.com; or fax to 503-623-2395. Please follow application directions listed here; don’t make us search the web for your generic online portfolio. Tell us personally why you want to work for us and why we should hire you. Deadline to apply is Tuesday, Nov. 5, but don’t delay – we may act fast if the right candidate comes along. The possible start date is sometime in mid-November.
