The Times Media Co. is seeking an energetic and ambitious sports director who will drive digital audience growth and lead the conversation in our community.

We're looking for a talented and curious newsroom leader who values enterprise journalism, finding the stories and personalities behind the scores, and analytics-driven decision-making.

The sports director answers to the deputy local news editor. The position is full time, salaried and offers medical, dental, life insurance, 401K plan, employee assistance program and paid vacation and holidays. Hours generally are at night, but flexible depending upon job demands. Some weekends as needed.

The successful candidate’s essential duties and responsibilities are:
    • Serves as editor of daily sports content with a digital first emphasis to our website and social media channels as well as publishes in print. This position seeks opportunities to grow the digital sports audience and build on The Times’ brand.
    • Supervising and assigning staff; preparing coverage plans; editing copy; writing columns and stories as required. Develop and execute short- and long-term planning and delegate responsibilities to carry out those plans. Staff development and supervision, including recruitment and training.
    • Serves as representative of the department in the community.
    • Serves as part of newsroom management. Serves as department's primary liaison with other departments, including news, regional design desk, photo, advertising and marketing.
    • Perform other duties as need and/or directed.
Interested candidates should apply online at www.nwi.com/timesjobs

I’m interested but have tried getting a hold of a couple of people via email to ask questions and have gotten no response.

Looks to me as if this shop is looking to do one or more of the following: 1) save cash by minimizing this salary; 2) de-emphasize sports coverage and/or 3) maintain an iron/anal managerial grip on its newsroom. Why do I say this? Because the position isn't for a sports EDITOR, it's for a sports DIRECTOR. And the hire will not report to the managing editor, but to the "deputy local news editor." Looks like it will provide all of the work, all of the blame, not enough of the reward and very little of the freedom to stretch one's creativity. Par for the course at this place.

Seems like Lee is going in the Gannett direction ... what you have said about all 3 is EXACTLY correct.

No. 3? Holy cow? Didn’t realize that. And is there a reason why this is the case? Was it in house winner?
