    SPORTS REPORTER/DESK ASSISTANT

The Wisconsin State Journal has an opening for a part-time reporter/desk assistant in Sports. Hours worked are almost always at night (including regular weekends). During the school year, the position will include five shifts of six hours each. Summer hours will be reduced.

We seek an organized, detail-oriented person interested in building and developing desk and leadership skills while keeping a strong hand in writing. The ideal candidate will be a team-oriented, attentive, get-the-job-done individual who can carry a task from initial request to completion with minimal hand-holding. Understanding of prep sports is a must. Experience is a plus, especially in handling busy prep sports nights from the office. We will provide task-specific training, supportive supervision and an opportunity to grow.

    Core duties include:

Assist prep sports editor in leading the phone crew on busy prep nights. Answer calls/faxes/emails; enter results into SportsStats online system, input box scores in our style. Create conference roundups for print and online using Adobe InCopy. Track missing game reports and lead effort to “chase” those reports to make deadline.

Compile weekly prep sports event schedule using various conference websites. Track rescheduled events. Follow through to ensure schedules, rosters and results are up to date online, working with online sports editor.

Build the Scoreboard (agate page) one to two nights per week, using InCopy. This will require training, attentiveness to State Journal agate style, consistent adherence to established best practices, interaction with Sports copy desk and a no-miss, no-excuses respect for deadlines.

Writing: Notebooks, features, previews and blog posts on prep and small-college sports. Most writing can be done from home or office. Event coverage will come into play when warranted, but the primary responsibility on busy nights will be to work from the office.

Starting pay range is $11 to $12 per hour, depending upon experience. Valid driver’s license and dependable vehicle with proof of insurance required.

    SPORTS ASSISTANT

The Wisconsin State Journal is seeking a reliable, motivated, outgoing person to take scores, statistics and highlights over the phone, fax and email on high school, college and recreational sports. No shifts will run later than midnight; most will end at 10:30 or 11 p.m. Typing skills are required. Sports knowledge is a plus. This entry-level position also requires some Web-based data entry and, in time, can lead to writing and editing opportunities in the sports department. We offer a strong team environment and solid growth opportunities. Sports Assistants are given experience using SportsStats, CoverItLive, TownNews CMS, V-Mix, Twitter, Flip video and other practical newspaper and Internet applications.
