Is it just me, or does anyone else find it interesting that the hiring process seems to be starting with the ME rather than the SE?

Also, I don't know much about this paper other than that they have a history of not paying stringers. OK, they have a history of not paying this stringer. But at least I'm not bitter.

Paxton fired 25 percent of the paper's newsroom staff the day after it bought the paper in 2004.

    This may help ...

Was the old ownership this ruthless?

The interesting part is that snail mail is to be sent to the ME, while the e-mail is to be sent to Jimmy Dupree, the SE.

No, Wick, the owner prior to Paxton was not this ruthless - nor this stupid.

A few years ago, I would have been ALL OVER this one. Now, not so much. I've heard Jimmy isn't a bad guy, and I can't say enough about Mike Potter and the juggling job he does with various beats with the Herald-Sun. Nice guy, too ...

I have nothing to add, other than Mystery Meat's avatar just caused some spilled diet coke.

A bit off topic, but what did you do about that? Because I've also been stiffed and would like that money.

Never did anything. It was my senior year in college, it was near the end of the semester, and I was incredibly busy. I must've faxed them the information they needed at least three or four times, and they kept saying they never got it. Essentially, they wore me down and I gave up. They were actually one of two papers I strung for that month to never pay me (the other one was Newsday). All totaled, I was out about $350. I did get the clips, though, which was better than nothing.

  11. It's Paxton. Just walk away slowly and don't try to startle it too much.

Nolan Hayes, the UNC beat writer, is leaving. They're shuffling duties around and that leaves a desk opening.
