The Los Angeles Times has an immediate opening for an experienced designer and leader to help oversee the newspaper's visual report in Sports.

The successful candidate must be a creative thinker who is adept at conceptualizing effective presentations in a manner that is inviting, clear, accurate and consistent with the philosophy of The Times.

We are looking for a journalist who thrives under daily deadline pressure, knows big-picture planning for projects and special sections as well as upcoming centerpieces, and is adept at collaborating with key players from editors and reporters to photographers and graphic artists to produce top-notch journalism.

The Sports Design Editor will be a point person and set a high standard for design and production (online and print). This person also will fill daily design shifts, including leading the presentation for the Sunday section.

Participation in daily budget meetings and planning sessions will be mandatory. A high level of technical knowledge is required, including proficiency in Adobe's InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, and newspaper production systems such as CCI.

Applicants must present a robust and well-edited portfolio of printed and online work that clearly shows creativity, conceptual clarity and an ability to communicate information in a visually effective and engaging manner. A proven record of design leadership is also desired.

The Sports Design Editor reports to Deputy Design Director Derek Simmons.

It's been a long time since I've ever seen the Times with an immediate opening.

The lead sports design guy, Vic Seper, was among those who recently went to ESPN L.A.

Very key cog on the desk.

Yup. As were the other two editors who went to ESPN.

This job post was strange, considering two years ago, they got rid of two of their talented designers: Steve Pratt and Joel Huerto, in the latest purge du jour.

Good to see they replaced one.
