    The Virginian-Pilot, a daily newspaper of 197,000 average circulation serving Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina, is seeking a copy editor for its Sports Desk. This person will copy edit stories; write headlines and captions; and proof pages, maps and graphics. The successful candidate must be able to work quickly and accurately under tight deadlines, show strong organizational skills, be able to thrive in a team environment and have an interest in sports from preps to pros.

    Education/Experience:
    -- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
    -- 5 years experience on a daily newspaper copy desk

    Preferred Qualifications:
    -- Three years experience as a layout/copy editor
    -- Experience on a sports copy desk
    -- Interest in or knowledge of sports

    Warning: Regardless of the complete lack of any mention of it in this job listing, the application page says you'll be designing inside pages and have to have proven design skills.

    So don't think this is copy-editing only, regardless of this ad.

    This is a design-first paper. We hired a copy editor from here at a previous stop, and while he was OK with copy (which was his job), he was better at design and was a bit misplaced.

    Point of clarification: The sports copy editor position at The Virginian-Pilot is primarily a copy editor position. Design is helpful but not required. The person taking this job will replace a retiring copy editor who does not do design. We're looking more for the copy editing EXPERIENCE than we are for design. -- Denise Bridges
