SPORTS COPY EDITOR (Casual/On-Call)

The Press Democrat, a New York Times Company, is looking for a casual/on-call Sports Copy Editor in our Newsroom.

Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: • Edit stories, write headlines and produce sports pages for publication. • Post stories and photos to the Press Democrat’s Web site. • Compile and format stats, standing and box scores for publication on the scoreboard agate page. • Compile and format local high school and college results for Empire scoreboard. • Moderate live blogs on Press Democrat’s Web site.

Requirements and specifications for the job: • Experience in editing, headline writing, newspaper layout and meeting deadlines: 2 years daily newspaper experience • Read and write English well and have a command of English language and grammar. • News judgment in story selection to meet newspaper goals, reader interest and legal standards. • Knowledge of current national and local sports news and trends. • Maintain a professional working atmosphere under deadline pressures. • Type accurately and work at computer terminals. • Experience with pagination system and/or page design software preferred. • Set priorities for completing work to Newsroom/Editorial Department standards to meet deadlines.
