We’re looking for a copy editor for our daily newspaper and growing website in Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah Valley.
The ideal candidate will be a strong designer and copy editor, able to improve stories, handle the wires and develop attractive pages on deadline. Editors should be adept at handling all types of pages, from news to sports to features. A candidate with strong sports experience would be an especially welcome addition, but mostly we're looking for someone with well-rounded copy editing skills.

Our universal desk editors use QuarkXpress and Baseview's NewsEditPro IQue on Macintosh. They manage Web content using Saxotech's content management system.

Our area is an outdoor enthusiast's dream. Our market stretches from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the George Washington National Forest. Our town is a growing tourism destination with bustling downtown streets lined with Victorian architecture. We have an impressive list of downtown entertainment venues with many others only a short drive away. Situated as we are amid a primarily rural area, we also offer a low cost of living and easy driving access to Charlottesville, Roanoke, Richmond and Washington, D.C.

As part of Gannett, we’re not only part of the nation’s biggest newspaper company, but we’re on the cutting edge of pioneering efforts to reshape the local news business for a new era. Our print circulation is 17,000 daily and 20,000 Sunday. Our site serves up about 1.8 million page views a month, making us far and away the region's most used news site according to Alexa.com. We offer competitive pay and an excellent benefits package.

To apply for this position send, without delay, a letter, resume and 10-12 work samples to copyeditor2009@newsleader.com or via snail mail to David Fritz, executive editor, The News Leader, P.O. Box 59, Staunton, VA 24402-0059. (Overnights to 11 N. Central Ave., Staunton, VA 24401). We value diversity.

How is Gannett hiring ANYWHERE after laying off all the folks it has recently?

Didn't they try to fill this spot not long ago?

    Last May's brief thread: http://www.sportsjournalists.com/forum/threads/55916/

Might well be a situation where they simply have to fill a job just to get the paper out.

Is the new hire required to take a furlough?

I have learned that the phrase "outdoor enthusiast's dream" and its various and sundry cousins translates roughly to "middle of bumfuck-nowhere."
