Don't veer too far down those side streets by the Exxon station.

Apparently some people were more surprised than others Iron City won the mythical Sporting News lottery.

Hope he's alright, though. Stan is a class act and has no doubt had a rough year with FSN dumping Sportsbeat.

  2. You are making too much sense to those who like to be incredibly rude and throw blankets over an entire group of people on a message board. Thank you for coming to Pittsburgh's defense.

I lived there for the better part of 21 years. I love it in short doses because of all the amazing things you listed. But there is still way too large a percentage of people there whose identity is based on the sports teams, and especially the Steelers. And there's also the underlying racist and homophobic attitudes which most natives try to ignore, but that's another story for another thread.

Are you sure the "underlying racist and homophobic attitudes which most natives try to ignore" isn't more of a nationwide problem?

He is correct. Pittsburgh is no less fucked up than many other urban centers in the United States.

OK, back to planet earth now....

The theater scene is not what it used to be because all the sponsorship and advertising dollars went to Stadiums for the Steelers and Pirates and Arena for the Penguins. Chist, Pittsburgh might be the only city in America where the symphony announced layoffs....

Every city has architecture and it is usually far more interesting than the Steel Building on Grant Street and the tower of ignorance on Pitt's campus..

The Strip District used to be vibrant with night clubs, a riverwalk/board walk district and a whole lot of other things going on --- now all of those places have closed, the only night club which manages to stay open has to change owners every six months because there are shootings and other episodes and nobody needs to go there any more even to go to Primanti Brothers because there are about 19 of them around town in better/safer areas.

The museums and libraries -- yeah, they recently (like two days ago) announced they will be closing some branches, laying a bunch of people off and cutting hours because, well, yeah the money is dried up and mostly because the city has been blowing all of its cash building stadiums and arenas and throwing parades and the mental midget 10-year old who is the mayor has nothing to offer......

Oh and "Very good music?" I suppose if you consider 1980's Hair bands, Def Leppard, Styx, Reo Speedwagon and Donny Iris (they are the only ones on the docket in these parts) very good music, well, yes, then "very good music" passes through, except -- no concerts actually come to Pittsburgh any more because the dolts who run the place insist on a 10-percent amusement tax so Coca-Cola got a bright idea -- let's build an ampitheatre about 30 minutes outside of the city and just outside Allegheny County and invite concerts there so all of the real shows, minus one or two big ones, like Kenny Chesyney (again, "really good music" lol,) take place so far from anything that there are more people from Ohio and West Virginia there than from Pennsylvania......

One other thing -- all you need to know about Pittsburgh is they elected a 10-year old mental midget to be mayor AFTER he 1) Had to pay money back to the city because he and his idiot buddies took a city vehicle out to the ampitheatre for a concert and trashed it tailgating 2) Snuck onto the course at Oakmont - stole a shirt that said American Express so he looked like one of the workers -- so he could get his picture taken with Tiger Woods, even though Woods people told him they weren't interested 3) Was arrested while tailgating for a Steelers game because he was intoxicated and got into an argument with cops 4) took a bunch of kick backs, including a very expensive golf package, from a company that does business and bids on things around the city 5) Was at Steelers practice taking pictures during one of the worst storms in recent history, one which included floods and power outages all over town. 6.) Actually said "hey I'm 27, if I want to hang out in bars, that's what people my age do...."

Yeah, this is a class city...... ::)

We're No. 352. That Midwest League title last season made all of the difference.

    Um, no.

When an entire region is populated overwhelmingly by white Catholic blue hairs, most of whom came from some place like Slovakia or Bulgaria or Ireland, well, then you can be sure diversity is not very high on the priority list of anyone....
