I demand a ruling on chili and gumbo.
If gumbo's a soup, so is chili.

To me gumbo is soup but chili is not. I will understand other's mileage will vary.

As a good Hoosier, I love me some navy bean soup.

As a good Chicago South Sider, I love me some cream of chicken.

There are places that have his likeness and supposedly use his recipes, but it's strictly a licensing deal. The days of his making and ladling up the soup from that little storefront are over.

Love pho. It's the only soup I eat regularly. Warm weather, cold weather.

Pozole is a favorite. Albondigas is awesome.
I like the broth and fixing for menudo, but I don't eat the tripe.

Clam chowder option is not specific enough. I love Manhattan style, but you can't get it in California.
And most of the New England style here is a gloppy, pasty mess.

Any kind of seafood bisque (usually lobster, shrimp or crab) would be my favorite, but New England clam chowder would probably be the soup I eat the most often.

A bowl of my son's chili that I enjoyed recently. I'm voting soup. And I get to pick up some more this weekend.

    Tomato.

But it must, must, must be accompanied by a tall glass of very cold milk.

Had a bowl of chowder when I was in Boston once that was unreal. Me and some of my coworkers flew to Boston to see the Yankees-Red Sox and went to the Sam Adams Brewery, they had a shuttle that took us to a pub called Doyle's. Fabulous food at that place.

    Tomato.

But I love to try all kinds of soup. Lobster bisque is high on my list. Conch chowder. And I would kill for some of my mom's potato soup.

See, chili like that is soupy. But other people make very thick chili that just doesn't seem like soup at all. Also, chili can double as a condiment, which is very unlike soup.

Gumbo definitely is soup, though, and it may be my favorite. I prefer decadent, hearty soups.
