    I agree, PC.

I own four Pernice Brothers albums and can say I enjoy every single song. That said, here's one song that could/should have been a hit:

That is correct. Another great tune is from the Ben Folds, Ben Kweller & Ben Lee group "The Bens" - Bruised. No studio version's online, which is unfortunate. The live one's not as good, but here it is...

  3. You make me cry tears of joy by bringing Will Hoge into this thread.

Will Hoge would have absolutely killed on "American Idol." He's that kind of talent.

Oh, and whoever said Wilco doesn't make radio-friendly music ... huh? Sure they've done their share of 15-minute jams to prove their artistic cred, but songs like "Heavy Metal Drummer," "Kamera," "Theologians," etc., etc., etc., are as catchy as anything.

I submit "Piece of Work" by Will Kimbrough:

I submit "Not That Cool" by Will Hoge:

And I submit "Looking for a Job" by Todd Snider:

Todd Snider did get a smidgen of radio airplay in the 1990s for songs like "Alright Guy" and that jokey song about grunge bands, but not as much airtime as he deserves. He's got a lot of talent. Good call, and thanks for posting that link, Waylon.

  5. I'm a big Mat Kearney fan, but how can you say a song that is part of an album that came out within the past two weeks is already one that "should have been a hit?"

This single was released in March, I believe, and the highest it's hit was 123. Now, it seems to be getting more airplay, so it could be the rare good hit like "Love Song" by Sara Bareilles.

And Huggy, that was me that mentioned the Gaslight Anthem. I loved just about every song on '59 Sound.

I stand corrected. It was PC who turned me on to 'em. Either way, it's a terrific rock and roll album. "Here's Looking At You, Kid" is just an amazing song.

That's a good one and I also really love "Great Expectations" and "The Patient Ferris Wheel."

    As for some other songs:

It's tough to find a great recording of this, but "Barrier Reef" by the Old 97s:

And from some of my favorite female singer/songwriters. "Run" by Amy McDonald:

Most people know "1234" by Feist, but I'm partial to "I Feel it All":

These next two probably aren't poppy enough, but I love them both.

"Almost Lover" by the Fine Frenzy. Her voice is achingly beautiful in this song:

    "Breakable" by Ingrid Michaelson:

And if this song wasn't so centered around the word fuck, it would be the ultimate "what the hell was I thinking" song. "Fuck Was I" by Jenny Owen Youngs:

Mostly because of poor single selection, IMO. "Sugarbuzz," "My Way," "Mixtape" and "Bethamphetamine (Pretty Pretty)" are great songs, but they don't grab you with one listen. None should have been the first single off their albums. All were, IIRC.

The same goes for "The Weight of Her." It's a great song, but "Going back/going home" and "Closer to the truth, further from the sky" are much more attention-grabbing.

For those feeling the New Pornographers' love...

Neko Case, "Hold On Hold On"

And for Velvet Underground and Jesus & Mary Chain fans...

    Raveonettes, "Aly Walk with Me"

And when Arcade Fire and Interpol start getting played on radio, please let me know.

    The Granny Guest

Arthur Lamb's "A Bird in a Gilded Cage"

    Gene Jefferson's "I'm Certainly Living a Rag-Time Life"

And Hughie Cannon's "Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home?"
