Yes, I'm an old white guy. So one of you young 'uns explain this to me. I really want to understand.

No clue. I kill shoes like a fat guy at a buffet.

This must be proof the Michigan economy is doing just fine. The youth of Detroit have $1,000 from their jobs to toss away on sneakers.

Someone explain the vintage baseball card/$750 Scotty Cameron putter/rare movie poster/Capodimonte porcelain/netsuke figurine/hand-carved creche collection/F250 with lift kit/the acquisition and curation of a rack of miniature pewter spoons alphabetized by state/cupboard full of souvenir beer mugs/etc., ad infinitum, ad absurdum, world without end amen, to me.

If you can't explain everything, why try to explain anything?

I teach in inner-city Houston. Some of my kids told me they'd do this when new Jordans came out. For some reason, they're a status symbol. Illogical to me, perfectly logical to them -- like a lot of things, it turns out.

Pewter spoons have a decent chance of appreciating in value.
The prices and "excitement" over these shoes from Yeezy, on the other hand, make no sense to me.

Five years from now they'll have been worn six times and be given away to the local shelter.
