Soccer Jargon Question: Back line (2 words) or backline (1 word)?

I always used it as two words, because writing middleline or frontline didn't make much sense to me.

My former employer, however, insists it should be one word (like frontcourt or backcourt in basketball).

Maybe it's interchangeable and correct both ways?

I don't see any good reason why it would be one word.

    This thread sucks already.

    I blame soccer.

But in five years it will be the most popular thread here.

Wanker is one word. Wank er is two words. W ank er is three words.

  6. Back line. Two words. I cover high-school soccer regularly.

I stayed in a Holiday Inn last night, and bedbugs is one word.

Can you provide an example in a sentence?

I wonder if it can be written both ways, depending on its usage.

    For example:
John Doe on the back line
    Backline player John Doe

    That's just a guess, though....

This is how my former paper used it:

"The backline returns plenty of experience with four seniors."

"If the Podunkers use a four-man backline, senior Joe Schmoe will play the other center back with senior John Doe and Billy Black on the outside. If they use a three-man backline, Schmoe will slide to the outside."
