Vox Media employees go deep, thriving on innovation and change while ambitiously seeking to master their subject areas, hone their craft, and improve their communities. We help smart, talented, creative professionals make a meaningful impact in media, technology and the world around them. The Vox Media house of brands includes industry-leading media forces like SB Nation, Eater, The Verge, Vox, Curbed, Recode, Racked and Polygon, and reaches an audience of hundreds of millions, generating over a billion content views each month.

SB Nation, the place where sports fans meet to be surprised and delighted together, is looking for an ambitious talent to lead our soccer coverage and take it to the next level. The ideal candidate has experience building audience, and can take the huge world of soccer and focus on the parts that will resonate with a North American audience. As soccer editor, they’ll be responsible for directing coverage of live events, shaping the voice of the section on and off platform, and building audience wherever fans are. Did we mention that it will be fun?

SB Nation is the fastest-growing online sports media brand, including SBNation.com, our national flagship property, and the largest network of more than 300 individual fan-centric sports communities. Our network is powered by the most respected web-native sports journalists.

    Responsibilities:

    • Editorial planning and overall strategy, including interacting with the different SB Nation departments (Storytelling, Programming, Video and Team Brands). You’ll be directing the overall strategy for daily coverage of the sport, and planning ahead for tentpole events (World Cup) with a focus on thematic packaging across the SB Nation network.
    • Audience development on and off platform: Create a place where fans can be fans, whether on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and emerging platforms.
    • Directing the voice of SBNation.comsoccer, with an eye towards North American audiences. Soccer is a global, sprawling sport and we can’t be everywhere at once. The SB Nation Soccer editor should direct targeted growth of the brand and push our coverage to drive conversation among smart fans.
    • Managing the daily publishing rhythm and breaking news, as well as keeping calendars and organizational tools updated.
    • Editing contributions from staff, part time and freelance writers. You’ll be shaping longer pieces, assigning and approving shorter news posts and posts targeted for social platforms, and working with writers to make them the best they can be.
    • Working with programming team to make sure that content is promoted and distributed effectively.
    • Developing a network of freelancers to diversify SB Nation’s soccer coverage.
    Requirements:

    • Soccer fan! Has an understanding of North American consumers' perspective to innovate beyond EPL-first coverage.
    • Experience editing at a digital outlet.
    • Creativity and drive to try new things, experiment, and adapt.
    • A proven ability to grow audience in soccer, especially across platforms.
    • Familiarity with using publishing analytics and a willingness to adapt coverage based on data.
If this is you, send us a cover letter spotlighting a moment that made you fall in love with soccer and an example of great soccer storytelling you’ve seen on the internet this year.

The website says anywhere, which means remote. That makes me question if it's full time.

LOL. So now instead of getting hammered for the shadowy particulars on their job postings they're just gonna omit them altogether and make you guess as to whether it's full-time, part-time, "small stipend", indentured servitude, or what have you. Never mind anything superfluous like benefits. Bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off.
