Speaking as someone with fairly strong ties to Georgia:

    Oh. Hell. No.

I concerned about what this would do to the names of the Mexican states of Baja California and Baja California Sur.

Do they become Baja Sur California and Baja Sur California Sur?

    That just wouldn't sound right.

On a positive note it would raise the collective IQ of both states.

The only thing good about the LAT writing that stupid story -- or should I say ripping off that stupid story from the P-E -- is that it took up editorial space that would have gone to another "the traffic jam from hell is coming" or "the Royals are leaving" story.

And LAT was late to the party on Carmageddon, too, but now they're all over it.

New state idea falls flat at Riverside County Board of Supervisors meeting

    http://www.nctimes.com/news/local/swcounty/article_739f9f86-2d59-5142-95c9-aa8db336300d.html

Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone's vision for a new state of South California got no support from his fellow supervisors Tuesday, although they did approve his modified plan for a summit of local government leaders.

But Stone was ordered not spend any county money or resources organizing or conducting the summit.

I guess that if SoCal doesn't get their way in statehood, they can join Texas in secession. Arizona and New Mexico might join up and then we could annex Mexico and make our living selling drugs to the idiot Americans on Wall Street and in D.C.

SoCal to replace Texas makes more sense.

    Forget SoCal...

Let's revive the plan to purchase Siberia!

That would be liberating for the Texans, who could join OPEC and help raise America's pump prices to $7 a gallon.

And, of course, allow our Mexican criminals to ship their "trade" right through Texas into the U.S., provided they don't stop. I think business in 49 rather than one would be a deal they'd take with Wall Street at the helm.

    But seriously:
SoCal or even East Cal is so different from the coast or the north, they need their separate identities.
