    My bad. It's the following Monday (Dec. 9). Was getting ahead of myself.

    at what, exactly, is mccarron better than murray?

    heisman voters have come a long way in recent years as far as actually giving it to that year's best player (or best player who is a qb or rb, anyway) and not to an upperclassman whose team is exceptionally good. alabama has 10 shutouts the last three seasons. aj mccarron didn't play defense in any of them.

    A presentation to McCarron would not be a matter of an upperclassman whose team is exceptionally good.

    It would be presented to a future pro who has done exactly what he has needed to do to help keep his team unbeaten.

    What does "future pro" have to do with anything?

    I've wound up with a Heisman vote for the first time in a very interesting year.

    I think it matters because the draft acts as somewhat of a confirmation on whether a player is actually performing to the level we think he is, or whether he's instead a product of his system and supporting cast. I definitely took professional prospects into account when making my vote. (Example: I voted for McFadden over Tebow.) I understand an exception like Eric Crouch, who was playing a position that just doesn't exist in the NFL. Or even Tebow, largely doing the same. But McCarron is a traditional pocket passer running a traditional pocket passing offense. It's definitely helpful to get a second opinion from the scouting community.

    And people wonder why the Heisman Trophy is a joke.

    No, no, no. You don't get to just make one of your Meatball drive-bys. Show your work. What's a "joke" about:

    (1) The Heisman, in general? It seems like voters get it right or close to right pretty much every year;

    (2) What I said incorporating NFL prospects as an evaluation tool?

    So, in other words, it's completely irrelevant when it comes to college football awards.

    Or are you saying Tommie Frazier was a shitty college football player?

    And read it better this time.

    Meatball drive-bys? What does that even mean?

    I think it's a joke that voters would base their vote (even slightly) on which player will make a better pro. Better to vote based on what we know rather than what we think might happen in the future.
