Pern, we moved from the mainland to Hawaii and back again, both times on the company's dime. Because we weren't paying for it, and because we had already hit the point in our lives where you buy the "real" furniture, etc., we moved a lot of stuff.

Any reputable moving company can handle it. Ask your new shop if there's a relo specialist they work with. Two things to be prepared for: it will take a long time for your stuff to arrive (think slooow boat), and they will ask you to inventory everything (in case the boat goes down and you claim insurance). The inventory does not have to be as crazy-making as they will make it sound at first. For example, we were initially asked for a list by title of every book and CD (pre-iTunes days) we'd be moving. That would have run to a few thousand titles. I convinced them to live with a raw count and a videotape scanning shelf by shelf.

Every other move I've ever made, I waited until my license plates and driver's license were ready to expire to get new ones. In Hawaii, get your license immediately. It means you qualify for kama'aina rates and, if you plan on seeing the islands at all, you'll want them.

I'm assuming they told you that if you move pets, they'll need to be quarantined.

You just missed the holidays. Eleven months from now will be the best New Year's Eve you've ever seen.

Do not cling to eating only Murrican food. And don't think Hawaiian music is the cheesy stuff you've heard on the mainland. Once you've paid attention for a while, you'll start to recognize which slack-key guys use which tunings.

    Lucky you live Hawaii, bra.

My wife's cousin just came back to the lower 48 after living on the island for two years.

She sold all her stuff before she left and bought new/used when she got there.

She did the same thing moving back.
