Most people forget now, but Avery was lights out in the 1995 NLCS and World Series. He pitched the clincher against the Reds, going six scoreless, and picked up another win in Game 4 against the Indians (one run in six innings). Definitely on the downside at that point, but he still managed to make a difference as the Braves won their only (alas) world championship of the 90s.

There was one year Pete Smith started 8-0 or something like that.

My sister had a thing for Pete Smith. He had one of the best mullets in the NL.

Ron Jeremy and friends might beg to differ.

That was 1993. I think he made his first start after the All-Star Break and won all those games during the pennant race with the Giants.

Wait a minute. The guy made 17 All-Star teams (two in '59, '61 and '62), was in the top five in the MVP voting four times (top 10 six times), won a Cy Young (and was in the top three in voting five times) and is in the Hall of Fame. Explain to me please how he gets no respect?

Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux are all hall of famers. It's a shame they likely won't all go in at the same time.

The 60s Orioles were the first that sprung to mind as a comparison, but they weren't as domimant for nearly as long as the Braves rotation.

Why's that a "shame?" I can think of many shames, that ain't one of them.

    Game 1: Smoltz (7IP, 2R, 4H)
    Game 2: Glavine (6IP, 1R, 6H)
    Game 3: Maddux (5IP, 2R, 5H)
    Game 4: Neagle (5.2IP, 3R, 7H)
    Game 5: Smoltz (6.2IP, 4R, 9H)
    Game 6: Glavine (5.2IP, 2ER, 7H)
Can't blame them for the Braves' bats sucking. Each left the game with the Braves having a chance.

Sterling Hitchcock went five innings in both games he pitched. Hardly the stuff of legend.

No disrespect from this corner. Spahn was the man.

Here is his grave in Hartshorne:

The Dumpster in the backgound is just a tad unfortunate.

"winningest left-hander in major league history"

That's for sure, and it'll remain true for a long, long, LONG time.

    RIP Hooks.
