The lack of Queen mentioned on this thread makes me sad.

I'll have to get back to y'all with the other 19 on my list.

rmanfredi: Thanks for remembering ... had a lot of fun compiling that, plus quite a few beers. You inspired me to dig up the thread:

    http://www.sportsjournalists.com/forum/threads/83849/

If memory serves, my goal with that was to throw some "newer" songs into the mix, instead of just the classic rock standbys.

I think I'll do that here, too ... when I have more time, I'll nominate 20 musical acts from the past 30 years I think are "greatest of all time" material.

    Great thread idea ...

EDIT: Ah, changed my mind ... just went with my 20 favorites, many of whom started out before 1980.

Quite a few votes for GNR, but did they have a long enough career to really get into all-time great territory? Appetite is a great album, Use Your Illusion is a great double album, but then what? Lies was four new songs and live versions of four songs off Appetite. Then there was the album of cover songs. Then 20 years of nothing before the overhyped and underwhelming Chinese Democracy. To me they're like the major leaguer who puts together three great seasons, then basically disappears. Do you put that guy in the hall of fame? GNR: the Terrell Davis or Grant Hill of rock n' roll.

Guns N' Roses is on my list precisely for those reasons. GN'R is the one that got away. You'll never forget those perfect moments, those moments you'll carry with you for the rest of your life.

And, for comparison's sake, The Beatles lasted all of seven years. Their output was absurd, but they lasted about as long as GN'R.

OK, after skimming through the comments ... I agree, "favorite" is the criteria to use. Much more variety and arguments.

Therefore ... off the top of my head, and somewhat in order of importance:

    1. Rush
    2. Neil Young
    3. The Beatles
    4. Pink Floyd
    5. The Beach Boys
    6. Prince
    7. Pearl Jam
    8. Genesis
    9. Jefferson Airplane
    10. Uncle Tupelo
    11. Cheap Trick
    12. Guns 'n Roses
    13. Todd Rundgren
    14. The Jayhawks
    15. Thin Lizzy
    16. Metallica
    17. Wilco
    18. The Who
    19. Chicago
    20. Drive-by Truckers

and, if allowed to pick one for "honorable mention" ...

    21. Supergrass*

    * — yeah, I realize these guys probably aren't even among the top 100 influential British rock bands of all time. But if I'm being shipped to a deserted island and can only take music by 21 artists, I would pick Supergrass over the Clash, Sex Pistols, Oasis, Blur and whatever other more influential band you can throw out there (besides the ones mentioned higher in the list). I have this SportsJournalists.com handle for a reason, folks! :D

Favorite Acts (order subject to shifting):

    1.) Pavement
    2.) The Velvet Underground
    3.) The Beatles
    4.) Grateful Dead
    5.) The Clash
    6.) Hendrix
    7.) Beach Boys
    8.) The Rolling Stones
    9.) Sleater-Kinney
    10.) Nirvana
    11.) Van Morrison
    12.) The Ramones
    13.) Elvis Costello
    14.) The Band
    15.) Apples in Stereo
    16.) Girl Talk
    17.) Bob Dylan
    18.) Dinosaur Jr.
    19.) The Feelies
    20.) Phish

Tough list to make, because I'm more of an album person outside of my top few favorite bands. For instance, Springsteen's first three studio and first live albums are among my favorites. Not a fan of the rest of his work, which obviously makes up a substantial party of his collection. Not sure how to appropriately rank someone like that on my list.

Damn, some great acts I left off my list. Definitely should have had Jack White/The White Stripes/etc. on there.

I see a lot of love for Radiohead, but while I admire their weirdness and experimentation, it's hard for me to get into anything other than OK Computer (which is one of the 1990s best albums).

Gov't Mule and Isbell are strong picks, YGBFKM.

Oh, and welcome back, senior Diaz. Long live power pop!
