A married Buffalo teacher had been repeatedly warned about an “inappropriate” relationship with a student in the two weeks before she and the 14-year-old boy disappeared overnight Monday, school officials said Tuesday.

“We warned the teacher about her behavior, initially restricted and then eliminated her contact with the student and, finally, suspended her for her noncompliance with our instructions,” said Cederick Ellis, the director of South Buffalo Charter School, in a statement Tuesday.

The teacher, Cara Dickey, 29, a mother of three from Clarence Center, “was deceitful and lied to us repeatedly, and now she is going to have to answer to the authorities for that,” Ellis continued.

Dickey, who had been suspended with pay and escorted out of the school Monday morning after she was caught text-messaging her pupil was found sleeping in her white Ford Escape in Springville on Tuesday morning by state troopers.

Around the same time, the student, Nicholas G. DeJesus, 14, of West Seneca, was found wandering around a Hamburg mall.

A former math teacher at Shore Junior High School in Mentor has been arrested after school administrators were notified of an alleged sexual relationship between the teacher and a ninth grade student.

Maggie Laughlin, 23, entered no plea at her arraignment in Mentor Municipal Court and was taken to the Lake County Jail. She faces one count of sexual battery and one count of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

Bond was set at $200,000 or $100,000 for each count. Laughlin will have to post 10 percent. If convicted, she could face up to six and a half years in prison.

School officials say Laughlin resigned her position with the district on June 6 after spending less than a year in the school system. Mentor Police Chief Dan Llewellyn said that, when arrested at her Willowick home Wednesday night, Laughlin admitted to some of the details of the charges against her.

Shouldn't these stories being slowing down a bit, since, as Alice Cooper once warbled, school's out for summer?

Or are these kids signing up for summer school because they've been want to be naughty?

Ex-teacher charged in student sex case
    8 male victims identified
    Friday, June 20, 2008
    CAROL ROBINSON
    News staff writer

Authorities say a former Clay-Chalkville Middle School teacher had sexual relationships with at least eight male high school students ages 15 to 19 between February and April.

Julie Pritchett, 34, is charged with two counts of second-degree sodomy and one count of second-degree sexual abuse in the cases of two boys under 16. The victims in the cases with which she is charged are under the age of consent.

Charges are not being brought in the other identified incidents because the boys are of consenting age or unwilling to cooperate with authorities, said Jefferson County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Randy Christian.

There could be other boys who have been involved with Pritchett that they are not aware of, Christian said.

Pritchett is expected to surrender to authorities, Christian said.

"It takes such a long time and so much effort to become a teacher. It is very difficult to understand that someone would waste all of that by such actions," Christian said. "It sounds like she has some serious issues to work through, but that will never excuse what she has done."

Christian said Pritchett, who was a special education teacher and a sponsor of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes club at the middle school, resigned from her tenured teaching position last month after she learned an investigation was under way.

The investigation began May 2 when a parent filed a complaint with the sheriff's office claiming his son was sexually abused by one of the school's teachers.

Jefferson County school board lawyer Burgin Kent said Pritchett was placed on leave as soon as school officials heard the allegations. They launched their own investigation and then notified the sheriff's office and the Department of Human Resources.

Kent said school officials also assured parents of those involved that they were doing everything they could to get to the bottom of the allegations.

"It was an unfortunate situation," Kent said.

Sheriff's investigators identified eight male students who attend Clay-Chalkville High School with whom Pritchett is alleged to have had sexual relations, Christian said.

Pritchett was the sponsor for the high school's Diamond Dolls, the hostesses for the baseball team. It was through that position, Christian said, that she came into contact with some of her former students who were involved in the high school sports program.

Christian said Pritchett started a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old former student. That relationship led to sex acts with his friends, Christian said.

The sex acts were initiated by Pritchett, who used several methods of approaching the boys, Christian said. Some of the acts took place on the school's campus and others at the homes of the victims.

Phone records were subpoenaed and support the statements of the victims and witnesses, authorities said.
