Do you wish you had played for more ball control?

They won the state title in 2005.

And yes, they've traditionally been good.

I'd kill to see a six-man football game. It's always intrigued me.

Shotty, it really is fun. Some of the best open-field tacklers I've ever covered played 6-man.

You terrify me sometimes. Jose Porras is one hell of a guy, though.

Not to be confused with the Hereford Whitefaces.

The Throckmorton-May game is apparently the highest combined score in Texas six-man history, with Fort Elliott-Miami the third highest.

The old record was Temple Holy Trinity 112, San Antonio Winston 83 in 2004.

Throckmorton was the only team to beat Richland Springs when the Coyotes won three straight titles (and all but one of their games overall) in four years from 2004-2007.

Throckmorton's one of those (near-) West Texas schools that hung on to its 11-man team for years and years out of community pride, but they just became too small to compete with the Mundays, Windthorsts and Archer Citys (Cities?). Throckmorton joined the six-man ranks and became a state power again.

They're not the first little Texas town to go through the process and won't be the last. Saint Jo dropped last year and schools farther east like Frost will have to eventually as they become non-competitive in 11-man. The cutoff to be eligible for six-man is 99.5 students this year. Nazareth (73 students) in the Panhandle is the smallest school in the state still opting for 11-man.

On the other hand, more and more East Texas schools are starting to take up six-man. Apple Springs, Leverett's Chapel and Oakwood are three examples. They have plenty of nearby private six-man schools to play in non-district and will probably be joined by many more in the future since East Texas is lousy with tiny school districts. The all-powerful small-ball basketball coaches are starting to lose their little fiefdoms.
