With 2 million people living in the Valley, it just seems odd that this property wouldn't have a columnist. Buddy who recently left another LANG shop said he doubts that the Daily News, in its curent form, will be published in a few years. Bring back the Green Sheet.

I'm not sure we should be shocked by anything that happens in LANG at this point. Dilbeck's demise is just more of the same.

Layoffs in Long Beach and Torrance:

There is no curse in the tongues of men, elves or Entish to describe Singleton's treachery.

Duran: Hired, worked hard for 6 months, laid off.

Fuck Singleton gently with a chainsaw, Heather.

Smeltzer? Oh fuck. That sucks. One of many, many talented photogs who have been laid off in the last year from LANG.

Bruce Hazelton, 30-year Breeze photog, out with six weeks severance.

Guessing Dilbeck got the same. 30 years in SoCal. Past 10 since the firesale by Gannett. Paulo got the same thing.

Yep. That's what they all get. Hope they had some vacation stored, and didn't have to take the "mandatory" vacations in '07-'08 like some others in LANG did.

    Unbelievable numbers in Long Beach:

"The Press-Telegram's newsroom staff has been reduced from 101 in 2003 to 26 in 2008 and yesterday, the employer eliminated three more dedicated, talented employees, leaving just 10 reporters and 4 photographers to cover our city, a place that half a million people call home."

I wonder if these are true. That's insane.

LADN freezes merit raises effect 01 Feb. Management won't promise to stop layoffs either.

    More crazy news from LANG:

    http://www.dailybreeze.com/ci_11454649

The Breeze is receiving a $52K grant from the city of Torrance to help offset moving expenses to its new building.

"In return, the newspaper has agreed to provide a credit for advertising space that municipal officials can use over the next five years 'for communication from the city to residents and businesses.'"

    Wow.

Well, Buck, I don't know, but it's really just barter. Cities pay for public notice advertising all the time, and papers take the money.

This is just a trade, and I don't know that it's any more suspect than the usual way is.

True, but a grant coming out of the city's Economic Investment Fund? That seems odd to me. Maybe it's normal business, I dunno. Just struck me, is all.
