Twin River Worldwide Holdings bought Arapahoe Park, Golden Gates, Golden Gulch and Mardi Gras in January. Been a while since Bally's owned them.

That's what I said - this isn't the Bally's we think of - when we think of Bally's. Shoot, this company is based in Rhode Island.

I never knew that the old Lincoln Park dog track would become ground zero for a wanna-be gaming empire. TIL, etc.

It's amazing. I still want to see a Super Bowl or March Madness inside a Vegas sportsbook someday but now I'd get most of my bets down before getting on the plane.

I think around the turn of the century, they put some work into Lincoln and revitalized it from a grimy, shitty place that only degenerates would go to... into a faux-ritzy place that nobody actually classy or rich would go to, but, that seemed to attract a steady clientele in their 40s to 70s from places like Johnston and Cranston. In the past couple of years, I think they were trying a similar trick with the Tiverton casino - Tiverton is basically the boondocks of Rhode Island, but the group acquired the rundown Newport Grand and shut it down once they got approval for the Tiverton casino. Downtown Newport attracts a lot of older tourists and it is packed in the summer, and there are tons of hotels between Newport and Tiverton, and I'm sure all of them now have shuttles to the Tiverton casino, which is less than 30 minutes away.

Look at it this way: Bally's is taking over a place where I used to place $2 show bets based on whatever dog(s) I saw going number 2 while being walked to the starting box. I don't think Rhody's metal track was oiled after 1982.

Greyhound racing was a terrible public display of animal cruelty and I'm glad Florida finally came to grips with it. But there was something fascinating about trying to not bet on the animal that might run through the infield and take a dump instead of following a moving piece of rabbit fur on a metal stick.

I read once that you should never bet a horse that defecates during the post parade (or maybe you should?) But you should probably never bet a greyhound that takes a dump during the race. Real loss of focus, that.

Knew a guy many years ago who was the announcer at the local greyhound track. That must’ve been a soul-crushing job.
