OK, I think I've got the swing of this now.

I think Imagine is a pretty simple song and there's an argument that it's the most beautiful.

  4. "Nutshell" by Alice In Chains.

Another from the Canuckistan division that crossed the iPod yesterday:

"What A Good Boy" - Barenaked Ladies

Some may think "Lady Sniff" by the Butthole Surfers is beautiful. I guess it's in the ear of the beholder.

    "Jealous Guy," John Lennon

"Come Pick me Up," Ryan Adams (despite the subject)

Great pull. Can't believe I forgot that on my own list.

Wow, hadn't heard that in ages.

I'll throw in one of my Stones faves, "Sway":

    Great calls on both.

I think "Winding Wheel" deserves some consideration, too.

I haven't mentioned "Bohemian Rhapsody" because the song is broken into three parts, but the ballad portion -- "Mama, just killed a man ..." -- might just top my list. Even after hundreds of listens, Freddie Mercury's vocals give me chills.

One more from an obvious old fogie ... "I Shall Be Released" by The Band.

This fits somewhere between the parameters we haven't quite set for this category. I love the love and passion and femininity in Chrissy's voice.

Talk of the Town by The Pretenders

Great thread, with some great suggestions.

The Jayhawks' "Tomorrow the Green Grass" WAS one of the great 1990s albums, absolutely.

Also, Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer" probably is my favorite Paul Simon song of all time. When he played a stark version of it after 9/11, it gave me chills.

One to add: "Sunrise" by the Who (really, just Pete Townshend playing acoustic guitar and singing):
