Simply Beautiful Songs

I was thinking about this today when "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova from the movie Once came up on my iPod. There are some songs, that while musically simple, are incredibly beautiful because of the combination of really good voices and lyrics.

I was wondering what some of your favorite "simply beautiful" songs are.

By far my three favorite from the past few years are:

    "Falling Slowly" (Once):

The first time I saw this movie in theaters, the scene where they play this song took me from enjoying the film to falling in love with it.

"Wintersong" (Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson):

These are probably my two favorite female singers right now and they combine beautifully for a song that transports me to sitting in front of a fireplace on a cold winter evening, laughing and drinking with my closest friends.

"The Trapeze Swinger" (Iron and Wine):

Fantastic lyrics mixed with a mesmerizing sound.

Here's the Aaliyah (sorry for not doing links). She was 14.

HA! This song came to mind when I saw the thread title.

I'll put "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star up.

How do you define beautiful? Some of the most "beautiful" combinations of music and lyrics deal with some less-than-beautiful subjects.

  7. "God Only Knows" - The Beach Boys
"In My Life" - The Beatles
"Still Be Around" - Uncle Tupelo

Obvious choice, but "Let It Be," The Beatles does it for me every time. Absolutely lovely.

I think that can be defined differently for everyone.

And seeing "Let it Be" made me think of this song:

"Let It Be Me" by Ray LaMontagne.

The one that comes to mind first is "I will follow you into the dark" by Death Cab For Cutie.

The other is "You Can't Just Smile It Away". This version is by a British group called The Beautiful South.

Great call on Winter Song by Bareilles and Michaelson.
