While criticizing the event, a reporter and a photographer still attended.
Would these extravaganzas stop if papers stopped covering them?

If ever there was a sign that high school sports has reached a level of hype beyond reality, it happened Sunday afternoon in the gym at Los Angeles Fairfax, not far from where the Oscars were being given out.

The announcement by 6-foot-11 center Renardo Sidney of his intention to attend USC was turned into such an elaborate production that it made quarterback Jimmy Clausen showing up to his news conference three years ago in a Hummer limousine to announce Notre Dame look amateurish.

... "Back in the South, this is what we do," Sidney's mother, Patricia, said. "We celebrate big."

    ROFLMMFAO.

Yeah, it's gonna be a gruelling, harrowing time to see if they can fight off all those scoundrels trying to force money into their hands.

God grant them the courage, strength and moral integrity to succeed in their quest.

Seems like most people's reasons for not liking these things is, "Because." Who cares? Let them enjoy their day. Who knows what the future holds?

Or you can use such an event to build relationships with people around the kid that pay off down the road when Johnny Superstar is going pro or gets arrested or whatever.

People need to shut up, put in their face time and milk it for all it's worth. It never hurts for a kid to know that you were there when you're one of 100 reporters trying to get in touch with him down the road.

Hmmmm. Reggie Bush. O.J. Mayo. Renardo Sydney. And USC.

Mike Garrett, there's an NCAA investigator on Line 1.

I started to watch the video and got bored. I assume the package had a USC hat in it?

if only all of these cutbacks, economic meltdown, furloughs would force us to stop covering this kind of overhyped signing day crap.

Yes, it did, saving Sidney a 2-year suspension under The NCAA If I Ran It.

MTM...i think you ask a valid question about, if the media would stop covering these extravaganzs, maybe they would quit staging such stuff.
it's wishful thinking, but covering such things creates even more of an alleged significance to it.
