Drugged teen saves family; mom faces arson, attempted murder charges

A 32-year-old Warren mother accused of setting a house fire in an apparent murder-suicide attempt of her and her children, who she tried to sedate with prescribed medication, received a $1-million bond during an arraignment today, Warren police said.

Tanya Laura Friedly was arraigned at a local hospital on two counts of assault with intent to commit murder and one count of arson of an occupied dwelling. If convicted of the assault charge, she could spend up to life in prison. The arson charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Friedly entered a not-guilty plea during arraignment before Visiting Judge Sherman Faunce of Warren’s 37th District Court. Her next court date is Dec. 2, police said.

Friedly is at the undisclosed hospital for observation from taking the medication. Her 13-year-old son, who called 911 to report the blaze, was released from a local hospital to a relative by Macomb County Child Protective Services. Her 10-year-old daughter was transferred from a local hospital to an undisclosed Detroit hospital for precautionary measures from the sedation, Lt. Michael Torey said.

“She’s going through emotional and physical problems and she wanted to end her life and she wanted to take her children with her,” Torey said of Friedly, adding that authorities found suicide notes from her.
