Ok that's taking "treat you like a man" a little too far. If you come at me with a gloved hand I'm running the other way.

If you ever want to work for the governemnt...

12 annual (you earn one a month and it can be used whenever without reason)
    2.5 personnal
12 sick (even when your wife is sick or your child)

    And it all rolls.

Oh, if you are there for 20 years...
24 annual (it slowly builds, but this is the most insane)
    2.5 personnal
    12 sick

    And it all rolls.

Plus, you get a smattering of days (XMas, 4th of July, Easter and the like)

I've used probably 5 sick days in my adult life. Four of them were for flu (or flu-like) bugs.

Where I used to work (as a reporter/editor), vacation policy was ...
    after 6 months: 1 week + 1 personal day (6 days total)
    after 1 year: 2 weeks + 1 personal day (11 days total)
Add 1 personal day for years 2 & 3 (to 13 days total)
    after 5 years: 3 weeks + 3 personal days (18 days total)
    after 8 years: 4 weeks + 3 personal days (23 days total)
I think you got 5 weeks after 15 years, but I never lasted that long.

Where I work now (as a schoolteacher)
10 "sick days" a year -- although they often can be used for other things ... unused sick days can accumulate to 180. Also, we get 3 "personal days" a year. We can accumulate unused days to get 6 total personal days.

    Sick days?

Where I work, they're called "occurrences." Three in twelve months' time earns one a verbal warning from the Employee Attendance Improvement Program, six = written warning, nine = three days suspension, twelve = out the door. And for the first eight, it doesn't matter if you're having a heart attack and you're on your way to the ER; you call in (or someone calls in for you), it's on your record for the next year.

And management wonders about morale problems...

Wow. Between this and the overtime thread, I suddenly feel really lucky to work at the place I do. I used to feel guilty about taking sick days, but not anymore. Life's too short, and the paper gets out whether I'm there or not.
