Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by thereligiouswrong, Dec 21, 2007.

  1. I've completed my annual tally.

    Sports: 0
    Rest of floor: 215

    About the same every year.

Do you guys get rewarded for taking no sick days? No sick days = two extra vacation days. One sick day = one extra vacation day.

I don't think we took any sick days either.

When people talk about sick days, I always think back to my first gig. One man sports department at a small rag.

The publisher always liked to talk about our "generous" benefits package, which included sick days.

Of course, since no one else in the office knew how to lay out pages -- save the guy who did news, and he had his own pages to do -- I never did get use any of those sick days.

    Weird.

  5. I've used two sick days in 10 years. That may be a bit below average, but we have cock-knockers in other departments who use two a month just because they can. At our place, if you're out for more than two days, you need a doctor's excuse. Miraculously, most of our "sick" employees recover after two days off.

My last job gave me five paid sick days per year. In the final year, I used them all when I was hit with an upper respiratory infection. Otherwise, it was an unofficial week of vacation during the summer so I didn't have to cover fucking July 4 Legion baseball tournaments.

I can count on one hand the number I've used since 2000. And I can count on one finger the number I've used since the start of 2003.

I'm curious as to how many total sick and/or vacation days everyone is allowed. I just found out that it's going to be five vacation and three sick days a year for everyone at my paper starting in January.

We have the same benefit at our pub that King Creole is talking about, but after a certainly length of tenure, they don't give you an additional two days. They pro-rate it instead.

But I'm healthy, for the most part. In seven-plus years I've only missed one game, which didn't count as a sick day because I already worked over what I was supposed to.

  12. 1 year = 2 weeks vacation
    4 years = 3 weeks vacation
    10 years = 4 weeks vacation
    20 years = 5 weeks vacation

No policy on sick days, therefore rampant abuse
