Take all the time you want, slappy. The issue was settled Saturday night.

Nope, done. Their people will get a hold of his people, and whoever's doing this story will have months to work on it.

  3. No one should be named sportsman of the year again until Dick Hoyt gets it.

When Phelps got his eighth, I was telling everyone in the newsroom, "The SI editors are estatic; they can now start planning for the Phelps Sportsman of the Year issue."

    Doesn't Obama play pick-up basketball?

Seriously, Phelps has set the bar very, very high.

The race ain't over, but let's just say Secretariat (Phelps) is in first.

I think it's safe to say it's over...

Give me a scenario where someone could top Phelps at this point.

Spitz didn't get the award in 1972.

So why is Phelps a lock in 2008?

Only the US Olympic hockey team (1980), Ed Moses/Mary Lou Retton (1984), Bonnie Blair/Johann Olav Koss (1994) and Bobby Morrow (1956) have won the award in their Olympic years.

The problem with Olympians is that they are in and out of our consciousness in a couple of weeks. And it does help greatly if your sphere of influence extends beyond the pool (or court or field or wherever you play your game). Does Phelps'? Beats me.

Thus, I'm not so sure he is a lock. Seems he is on Aug. 19, of course. But it's a long year.

If the cubs win the world series, they'll be in there somehow

If Phelps doesn't get it something is seriously wrong.

A couple of posters have mentioned that Spitz didn't win it so Phelps might not either.

In 1972, the honor went to John Wooden and Billie Jean King.

If you can name anyone in the sports world today remotely on par with either of those legends, give them the award right now.

Otherwise, Phelps gets it, not just because of the medals, but because he won without being a cocky jerk, without bragging, without yapping about all the endorsements this would bring.
