The few radio stations who organized such boycotts and rallies did so under the protections of their First Amendment rights, as did the Dixie Chicks with their comments and songs. People could have gone straight from an anti-Dixie Chicks rally and still bought a Dixie Chicks CD or concert ticket. There has never been one instance of supression of their right to A. make a living and B. exercise their right of free speech.

However, they did make the mistake of alienating their customer base. Their own fault. The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young etc., made political statements in their music and supported those statements in other ways, and their natural base supported those stances. I'm sure people who did not agree with them made personal decisions not to listen to their music on the radio, not to buy a record/tape/CD or not to buy a concert ticket based on that disagreement. However, I never heard any entertainers and their supporters in the media and/or fans piss and moan as much as for the Dixie Chicks.

Maybe criticizing the Bush administration alienated a higher percentage of the Dixie Chicks' base than coming out against Vietnam or Nixon by the Beatles or CSNY, but that's their tough luck. They could have just, as the thread is titled, shut up and sang.

One more point: I do believe I heard many, many, MANY more snide remarks and insults about Ann Coulter's physical appearance before I heard anyone rip Natalie Maines for her weight. And the first time I ever heard anyone calling Natalie Maines fat was about six posts before this one.

That said, about Natalie Maines: I'd hit it...as long as she didn't talk.

There were a ton of Springsteen fans pissed off that he played the Vote for Change Tour (with all monies going to MoveOn). These same fans were pissed he was making anti-Bush comments during The Rising Tour. Some of them went as far as getting tickets for the Vote for Change Tour through scalpers in the parking lots the nights of the show so their money wouldn't go directly to MoveOn, others boycotted the shows. Although it was a small percentage of fans that were pissed, it was a very vocal minority.
He was victimized by Ann Coulter at some point, having her make the statement "shut up and sing" apply to him as well.

If you buy tickets... even through scalpers, the money for the face value of that ticket has gone to the official sources.

I tell you what pisses me off and that's the radio stations (as well as Nashville) who cut off the Dixie Chicks. I'm driving the other day and the DJ promises a Dixie Chicks song. Then he's like...Sike!!! Then he says, well maybe the ban doesn't apply to country songs..be right back with a DC country song. No such animal. He's just fucking around and comes back and plays a She-Daisy song. Now THERE's some country girl-band crap. No comparison, talent-wise, to the Dixie Chicks. The reason the Chicks gained so much respect when they debuted was the because the two sisters had great musical talent and Maines' singing voice. I like her, think she has a great voice.

Country music hates the Chicks, but keeps trying to replicate their sound and success. I keep hearing people compare The Wreckers (Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp) to the Chicks. I don't see it. I loved "Leave the Pieces" but I really don't like their latest one. Blah!
