Should working at a large daily still be a journalist's goal?

If I had more than a staff of 1.5 (I'm 1.0 of that) I wouldn't have to devote way too many waking hours to this job covering a 60K town. But at least I'm not covering church luncheons, though I do get plenty of yokels telling me I should do stories on them because they are unique people. I'll have someone on staff get back to you, sir. ;D

You have to love fame whores in small towns. The problem is when the publisher thinks readers actually care about those people.

I'm still in school and I'm praying each night that there's a job somewhere when I get out. Personally, as long as the pay is good enough and I'm happy, I'm not going to complain.

What would it have to be in order for the pay to be good enough? There are constantly openings, but often of the $20-25K variety.
