Should I use this quote about President Bush?

I am writing a story about an athlete who played at a high school in our coverage area who recently met President Bush at the White House because this athlete was a member of an NCAA-championship winning team.

The player said Bush asked the team which of you are going professional and the player said, "I was surprised that he knew there was a professional tennis career."

The player had several quotes about how great it was to meet Bush.

I'm pretty sure President Bush knows that professional tennis exists.

I want to leave the quote out because it is a non sequitur.

I am interested in feedback.

 

If it doesn't add anything to the story, leave it out.

 

I'd leave it out because I'm not sure if it'll advance the story. Being a non sequitur is also a factor.

 

I don't know... If I were a reader, I would think it's pretty cool that a local athlete got to meet the president.

 

The story is about the kid meeting the president. He's asking whether he should use the quote questioning whether the president knows that professional tennis exists. I say no.

 

I have filed the story. I did not use that quote.

You made the right call, X. If the kid was going to make a dig at the pres, he needs to do better than that.

 

I don't think the player was criticizing the president in this case. I thought the player was clueless with this quote. The player had a lot of praise for Bush.
