Should a team that doesn't win its conference championship play in the BCS Championship Game?

  1. No. Never. It's an unwritten rule, yes, but it should be doctrine.

  2. Let's leave the option open, as crazy things can happen in a season. There's got to be a HUGE reason

  3. The option should always be open. It's not a huge deal.

There's a lot that has to happen to open the door on this again, but it still looms. Thoughts?

Considering the inequality of schedules found in mega-conferences, it would be silly to shut out any team, and if you throw in tie-breakers, such as the potential Big 12 mashup, do you consider the three co-champs or just one "champion."

With all due respect to spnited, the simple answer is HELL no.

Give me a Division 1-A football playoff system or give me death!

This question alone is enough to prove that college football needs a playoff. It's the only thing that would provide a true national champion.

Did every national champion before 1998 win its conference?

I find "co-champs" bogus. If there are ways to determine a conference champion (head-to-head, championship game, hell, even letting the BCS standings rule like this year's B12 South and the '03 SEC East), then that team is the champion and the others aren't.

Should a team that doesn't win its conference championship play in the Theoretical Playoff?

Ridiculous to have that happen. We saw what happened when OU snuck in the year KState won the division.

A very good question. I'm interested to see the answer.

I have the feeling you're going to get death. :)

There won't be a playoff any time soon.

I say no, but I'd like to see all conferences go to a conference championship game, too.
