Shoe orthotics for runners

Does anybody have any experience with shoe orthotics? I'm a runner who has developed lower leg pain when running, and the doctor has recommended I begin wearing orthotics. A quick Google search though shows a pretty good split of people saying they're wonderful and others saying they only made the problems worse.

I'm tempted to try them for a short time just to see, but I'd appreciate any thoughts first.
