Shepherd Smith tells Ole Miss to stop with the "South Will Rise Again" stuff

Is this political? If so, apologies and deletion in order.

But I found it interesting. Apparently at the end of the traditional Ole Miss song (that sounds to me like "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" -- they do know that's a Grand Army of the Republic song, right? -- Ole Miss students now yell "The South will rise again" at games. Alumnus Shepherd Smith tells them to cut it out:

Kudos to Shep for standing up and saying we need to end some the Dixie stuff.

What's interesting is this apparently isn't even a "tradition" at Ole Miss. It's something the students have just stared over the past 5 or so years. Also, I find it humorous that the strongest arguments that people at Ole Miss put forth for ending some of their Confederate based traditions involve the recruitment of black athletes.

Ole Miss can recruit with the best of them. Houston Nutt is an outstanding recruiter and will charm the socks off most people he meets. Kudos for Smith. This is 2009. Time for people to wake up.
    ARE YOU LISTENING SOUTH CAROLINA?

I understand wanting to purge the most odious examples of Dixie worship, but is there any chance "The South Will Rise Again!" can be a general-purpose Southern pride thing? I can't view the video here.

If nothing else, it'd be a good tagline for Cialis. The South will rise again. And by "The South", we mean "your penis." You see what we did there.

Nutt isn't a bad recruiter. I have been impressed with him. What he's fighting is the perception of Ole Miss and Mississippi. That's tough but he may be the best guy in recent years who can battle through those problems.

Well, but what in other regard has the South failed to rise again?

I mean, it's been nearly 150 years since the start of the Civil War. The South is home to a booming population, a number of major businesses and many fine institutions of higher learning.

Short of being its own country again, what else can that lyric really mean?

Of course, I say that, but I'm an alum of Georgia. 'Glory, Glory to Old Georgia' may be the official name of the fight song, and 'Battle Hymn of the Bulldog Nation' the official name of the pregame song that begins with seven notes on a trumpet, but who are we fooling?

The coach before Houston Nutt arrived had what may be Ole Miss' best stretch of recruiting the school will ever see. Ed O couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag, but the man's ability to recruit players to Ole Miss was pretty amazing. Nutt's got a ways to go before he matches the recruiting success of Coach O.

Eddie O was a charmer but I definitely like Nutt and his ways.

What happens if Ole Miss fails to make a bowl game this year?

There's a pretty damn good chance they may fail to make a bowl game. I think the loss to Alabama showed Ole Miss that it wasn't ready for prime time. The loss to Auburn solidified it somewhat.
Last year was a magical year for the Rebs. This year......
