I know of two places that are doing just that and it's not working... Both writers in question are in their late 70s or early 80s...

 

And they're resisting? Got to hand it to those old coots then. More ornery than prideful.

Jack Shaffer isn't writing to the crowd at 50k papers or even 100k papers.
He's writing to the crowd at the Inky, Post, Times and Globe. The places where the newsrooms are union and have some protection from the cuts.
If you want to define the East Coast Media elite, just think of him. He doesn't give a flying fig about what happens outside the loop that runs from DC to Boston.
He may notice what happens in Chicago or LA, but that's about it.

 

I'll bet a lot of the bosses and owners of those 50K and 100K papers are paying attention to what he's spewing, though.

 

What the hell Wal-Mart you shopping at where any of the staff wears khakis? It's gotten to the point here where if they're not wearing a name-tag, I can't tell they work there.
