Shady publishing company

I wrote a little book for a well-established regional publishing company a while back. I had a flat rate, plus bonuses for specific sales numbers. They paid me the flat rate, but will never give me a straight answer on the number of copies sold. We had a contract.

Obviously the course of action, ultimately, it to hire an attorney. But I'm wondering if there is anywhere I can go to independently verify the number of books sold so I can avoid doing that.

Any other advice is also appreciated.
