I would say, even though it sounds a little odd, that a family must bang its HEADS.

Family may be singular, but assuming everyone in the family has a head, then heads are being banged.

Look at it this way.

Let's say your two-car family is moving cross-country.

The correct question would be, "Is the Smith family going to drive its cars (plural) all the way to Seattle?"

If cars is plural --- and it obviously should be --- then heads should be plural (unless you specify that it's the collective head that is being banged).

yes, a family, by definition, cannot have one head. nor can a team.

A team, or a family, bangs its heads, because like the dreaded hydra, it has more than one
