So let me get this straight.....

We can't eliminate spam. We can't get rid of cyber child porn. We can't manage online gambling. So let's just pull the plug altogether in the case there's some rogue muslim out there using hotmail to coordinate blowing up an Amtrak?

In what way does this differ from the Emergency Broadcasting System - which the government already controls and which has existed for decades without a peep from anyone?

Dear Az: Does this mean that if it passes, just like the Emergency Broadcasting System there will be "tests" where all Internet activity is stopped for ten seconds? Those would go over well. My company's entire business is pretty much in the cloud now. We'll disrupt the entire economy for a few minutes so our leaders can feel they have more control over a world they're not close to comprehending?

I'm for this. It will force people to buy newspapers to get info about the cyber attack. Too bad journalists won't be able to file their stories unless they are still lucky enough to own a Trash 80 like I do. ;D

I thought this was being proposed so we could party like it's 1990.

The terribly written story doesn't make much sense, but it seems the truth of what's being considered would be more along the lines of what I describe than a total shutdown of internet service. It also allows - like a utilities grid - for shutting down/off parts of the web if/as they become compromised.

Where IS the switch? How do you do this? Is the President of the U.S. actually does this, can someone in Nepal still get on the Internet?

Can you really shut down the Internet?

My guess is Stephen Strasburg has the answers and probably has the switch at his house.

So the first time Strasburg loses a game, the government can declare a state of emergency and shut down the Internet?

Like they would need a law to do this if they wanted to. If the oligarch masters want it done, it will be done.

Why not just shut down access to government sites? I find it hard to believe that national security is compromised if Stuart Scott's account was hacked or Youtube was attacked. Besides, this sounds like a plot from a Austin Powers movie. Could this man be behind it?
