The La Grande Observer is looking for an energetic, competitive reporter to cover college and high school sports. The best applicant will develop sources and regularly break news on their beats, complete great enterprise and feature stories and be able to write clearly and quickly on deadline. The applicant must work cohesively with the sports editor and the rest of the newsroom. Copy editing and photography experience is needed, and page building experience is preferred.

Duties will also include becoming the editor for the Outdoors/Rec section, which features generating columns, columnists and features every Friday, along with designing pages.

The use of social media (Facebook and Twitter) is required as it is a core part of our coverage, as well as continuing the process of improving our website coverage. Other requirements include knowledge of InDesign, AP style and photography.

The top applicant will be a self-starter, comfortable taking direction from editors, is prepared to work nights and weekends as required and can come up with innovative features and stories on athletes in the area. Experience writing sports is preferred.

La Grande is located in Northeast Oregon at the base of the Blue Mountains and is home to abundant outdoor recreation. It is also a farming and ranching center. The La Grande Observer is part of Western Communications.
