Even though I'm old enough to be your father, it's recommendations like this that reinforce my mancrush on you, Jones.

Charlie Bukowski is one of my all time favourites but what the hell is someone in Boston naming a bar after him?

He's Mr. LA,

A sampling and pure Charlie:

Big Night On The Town

drunk on the dark streets of some city,
it's night, you're lost, where's your
room?
you enter a bar to find yourself,
order scotch and water.
damned bar's sloppy wet, it soaks
part of one of your shirt
sleeves.
It's a clip joint-the scotch is weak.
you order a bottle of beer.
Madame Death walks up to you
wearing a dress.
she sits down, you buy her a
beer, she stinks of swamps, presses
a leg against you.
the bar tender sneers.
you've got him worried, he doesn't
know if you're a cop, a killer, a
madman or an
Idiot.
you ask for a vodka.
you pour the vodka into the top of
the beer bottle.
It's one a.m. In a dead cow world.
you ask her how much for head,
drink everything down, it tastes
like machine oil.

you leave Madame Death there,
you leave the sneering bartender
there.

you have remembered where
your room is.
the room with the full bottle of
wine on the dresser.
the room with the dance of the
roaches.
Perfection in the Star Turd
where love died
laughing.

A few thoughts:

First, what Buck said about Jillians, what Jones said about the Sevens, what Petty said about the water taxi, and what lots of folks said about the Freedom Trail and the Constitution.
For bookstores, try the Harvard Bookstore, in Harvard Square (not the Coop, though that's fine, too). And while you're in the Square, ask someone to point you towards Pinnochio's for some great Sicilian pizza.
If you're going in the winter, stop by Mike's in the North End (in the summer it's just mobbed). Great Italian bakery.
The nation's oldest bar is called the Union Oyster House, a good place for a beer. And if you're looking for fish, Legal Seafood is the local tourist favorite (they don't truck with Red Lobster in Boston), and it's certainly good. But if you want someplace a touch more authentic, find your way to the No Name. It's this little dive of a place on the commercial fishing pier down in what's known as the "Seaport District" - kind of by the convention center.
Have fun.

Thanks Irish.

The "No Name" sounds like our kinda place.

We are making notes.

Can't wait.

We hit up the Barking Crab Restaurant, and it was fabulous.

Is Giacomo's right around the corner and not far from the Parker House, kinda in a little alley?

There's also an awesome Applebees in Quincy and a great Fridays in Framingham.

You can't go wrong foodwise by hitting up the North End - Italian at its best.
