How, when they're playing Michigan is that possible?

Their other non-conference games might be a complete joke, but they're playing a good team from a BCS conference on a neutral field to start the season.

That's a lot harder than UAB, Coastal Carolina, Middle Tennessee or the other group of teams that the SEC schools play regularly in non-conference games.

Vanderbilt-Wake Forest is a traditional rivalry.

What does that even mean? LSU will be the preseason No. 1 next year, and Alabama has to play at Baton Rouge. That alone defeats your point. And they play Arkansas in Fayetteville. So they're playing arguably the two best teams in the conference on the road. Also, Tennessee should be improved if it can stay healthy. I'd say a East slate including any pair of Kentucky, Vanderbilt or even Florida would be easier than at Missouri and at Missouri.

And they open the season with Michigan, which is expected to be one of the two or three best teams in the Big Ten.

Sure, they have three cupcake non-conference games. But that one difficult one is probably the best non-conference game any SEC team will play next season. Their four conference home games are all against teams they were going to beat in either location if they're good enough to be in contention for league or national titles (which, with all the Crimson Tide are losing this year, I am not certain about just yet).

    Roll Tide.

I think a 5-3 conference slate sounds about right for Missouri (assuming a loss to Alabama, and a 3-2 record involving games against Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee and A&M). Missouri got a nice lift from the SEC, having Georgia and Alabama at home. A&M getting Florida and LSU at home is a nice deal, too.

It won't take long to figure out what kind of season Mizzou will have. Get, presumably, the two best teams in the East in the first two weeks. Win 'em both and you're off and running. Split 'em and you're looking at a nice, respectable first season (4-4/5-3). Lose 'em both and it might be time to start longing for the days of the Big 12.

As MileHigh noted, nonconference schedules are about the same for all BCS schools. The SEC nonconference slate looks a bit weaker because they have four slots to fill.

Most schools take on one "tough" noncoference foe and/or traditional rival, then buy a couple of home victories over the MAC, WAC, Sun Belt, etc.

As far as hoops goes, Missouri should be second or third best every year.

Actually, Mizzou might have an easier schedule than it had this season.

    Mizzou's 2011 Big 12 schedule included five teams in current BCS standings: Nos. 3, 8, 12, 14, 24. Mizzou's 2012 SEC schedule has 3: Nos. 2, 9, 16

    Based on ... what, exactly?

Mizzou finished top three in the Big 12 exactly twice. They haven't won a conference title at all since 1994.

And the SEC isn't that much worse in hoops than the Big 12, if its worse at all. Trade Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma/Oklahoma State for Kentucky, Florida and Vandy/Tennessee/Alabama/LSU/Arkansas/Georgia (seems those teams trade off being decent). On a year-to-year basis, it's about the same.

Once again, Mizzou is not some elite program that walks into any conference and intimidates anyone.

Of course, South Carolina will face Arkansas every year because that is the permanent cross-divisional matchup. That's gonna be tough until Petrino gets happy feet (inevitably again).
