The Seattle Times seeks an inventive, energetic sports page designer to join a creative design team that has earned its share of SND awards by never being satisfied with just doing the norm.

We have a great mix of sports teams in the Northwest that are covered by some of the best reporters in the business. Our section has earned APSE Top 10 daily honors eight years straight and has twice brought home the Triple Crown during that span.

We're looking for a candidate who has good sports knowledge, can generate ideas, has a creative spark and can function well in a collegial environment. Experience with CCI LayoutChamp and a strong knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator are preferred, but not required. Three years of experience at a metro daily newspaper required with five years preferred.

The independently owned Seattle Times is committed to serving its community with quality journalism.

To apply, send cover letter, resume and work samples to:

    Patricia Foote
    Assistant Managing Editor/Administration
    The Seattle Times
    P.O. Box 70
    Seattle, WA 98111

Please also e-mail a copy of your resume for our database to newsjobs@seattletimes.com, noting that it's a duplicate of material already submitted in writing.

The Seattle Times is a drug-free workplace.

Wasn't someone just hired there? Who left or is this a new position?

Is Paslay still there? He's good.

    Some history on the position...

Last summer, when I was promoted to ASE/presentation and my partner in design crime Jeff Paslay moved to Features, we had two sports design openings to fill.

We filled one with Rich Boudet (formerly of the Tacoma News Tribune) and the other was filled with a 6-month temp to get us to full staff for the then-quick approaching football season.

Now that temp position is open again for a full-time hire, so that's why we're looking.

We're looking to fill the position by no later than the middle of the summer, so I encourage all that are interested to get their portfolios together and send them soon for consideration.

If you have more questions, I'll try to answer them the best I can. Feel free to PM me.

I wish. The temp made like three times as much as I do. I believe he works for the Seattle PI now.

Folks, the temp in question, does not and never has worked at the P-I. I can happily say that she's currently being wooed by a couple of newspapers. I wish her the best in her budding career.

    Sorry, wrong temp.
A copy editor/page designer guy at the PI did do temp work at the Times last year sometime.

So, will today's settlement lead to a hiring freeze? The AP sorta speculated it could lead to layoffs at the Times.
