    I don't know a lot about this job, but at one time the Whig-Standard had a good reputation as a launching pad for a lot of journalists who went on to bigger and better things. Also had a good reputation for a paper of its size.

    Guess you would cover Queens, OHL's Fronts, hockey, RMC and high schools. I doubt you would cover Ottawa pro stuff.

    Sports Editor - The Kingston Whig-Standard


    Position: Sports Editor
    Location: The Kingston Whig – Standard Canada’s Oldest Continuously Published Daily Newspaper

    The Kingston Whig-Standard publishes six days a week serving Kingston and area. The newspaper has a reputation for excellence in journalism, is an important part of the fabric of the community it serves and has received multiple journalism and design awards and nominations. The successful candidate will be a key member of the newspaper’s management team, helping shape the direction and strategy of The Whig and the community with a focus on building readership and reader interaction.

    Key responsibilities include:
    • Lead and manage staff in sports department by assigning and editing stories, features and special projects
    • Superior writing skills, news judgment and a proven track record at a daily newspaper
    • Contribute to the team's development of a locally-focused sports section for the newspaper and website
    • Be a valued member of the newspaper's management team and participate actively in determining editorial vision and overall direction of the newspaper & website
    • Develop and supervise annual operating budget for the sports department
    • Be actively involved in the community

    The successful candidate will possess sound news judgment; have proven leadership skills, integrity and outstanding communication and people skills. This position demands initiative thinking, a flexible attitude and the ability to motivate and inspire. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and a commitment to excellence are critical.
