  2. The New York Times recently bought this paper and turned it into a "sister" paper of sorts. They used to compete with the Lakeland paper, but usually to no avail considering there's only three on the sports staff.

Unfortunately, the takeover is part of the reason this job is open.

    PM if you're really interested.

    Who own da (News) Chief?

Keep in mind also that there is no more spring training to cover here, thanks to the Indians dumping Chain O Lakes Park for new digs in Arizona.

I believe they also advertised for a features editor not long ago. Did they clean house? It's either indicative of an investment in the paper's quality upon the transfer of ownership or simply people jumping off the ship.

  6. The features editor got married. They also were looking for a copy editor. Not sure if it got filled or not.

Pretty sure there was a little bit of cleaning house involved, which included (as mentioned above) the former sports editor, unfortunately.

I am said former SE and had been for about three years. The "cleaning house" mentioned occurred when the NY Times corp. bought the paper from Gatehouse (which bought it from Morris a few months before). The offices were relocated down the street to the Lakeland Ledger's Winter Haven bureau.

However, of the 70 or so staff members working at the time of the purchase, only 25 were invited to the "new" office, excluding myself. We did get a severance package, but it was laughable. Basically, we came in on a Tuesday and were told Friday would be our last day.

    What an industry.

Are they looking for a sports editor or a universal desk copy editor?

More than likely a little bit of both.

PM me if you need any more information about the area etc.
