SC's road trip

Do what I did earlier this summer: Find some shithole town with a bad roadside motel and an even worse honky tonk bar. Rent one of the rooms, then proceed to go buy a few rounds for the locals.

Make up a nickname for yourself and tell 'em that's what they call you back home.

    Mine was "Shortstick."

I spent $200 and made a dozen new friends that night.

Having just survived a Mountain West road trip that wound up 15 hours each way, I vote for the shorter trip. But then you might get stuck with something like Rt. 80 through Wyoming, aka six hours of this:

I guess it depends if you really crave speed. I got antsy on the (admittedly much prettier) roads that had significantly slower speed limits. I would've rather cranked up CDs and driven 80 mph and gotten to the end that much more quickly.

How can you pass up a view like this from Highway 12?

I dunno. Would I spend 200 bucks to have people call me "shortstick"? Seems like I'd pay that kind of coin to get people to stop calling me that.

    Water and trees? REally?

    No thanks.

And for whoever said 'remember the memories'...I don't know. My memories are rarely made alone in a car on a functional drive. I prefer to save those for when I'm spending time with other people. Who says "God, I remember that 11-hour drive through the mountains...it was AMAZING! No idea who I went to go see though..."

You're not impressed by that pic? I think that looks awesome. I still vote for the interstate since you're going alone and as others have said it will give you better cell phone service and access to gas stations.

    Love that picture!
South Dakota and Idaho were my two favorite states to drive through in June.

Scenery is nice. Wyoming? Not so much.

But be careful about drive length. I think I was about spent after 15 straight hours. And I really like driving.

I would gladly get lost in Story, Wyo., for the rest of my life. Or at least until I got really bored.
