So, picking up a little extra scratch by helping organize the entries for this year's awards, and I gotta tell you... It's knocking my friggin' socks off.

Went through a stack of investigative journalism entries today and each one was just awesome. Then, a pack of business and economics reporting entries. Solid. Washington reporting: Damned good. And on and on.

What it's doing, really, is reminding me that for all the grunt work, all the shit assignments, all the fair-to-middlin' efforts we see because of reporter apathy or corporate cutting our legs from under us... man, this profession kicks serious ass. From San Jose to Washington to Iowa and Orlando. From Montana to Arizona and all points in between.

Nice reminder of why I wanted to be a journalist in the first place.

So, if you have anything entered or just have admired great work that's probably landing on my desk this week, attaboys and attagirls.

    That's all.

Scripps really should drop this in favor of a niche cable network awards gala.
