School nicknames (state by state)

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by I Should Coco, Mar 9, 2009.

  1. And the Madison-Grant Argylls...the one and only in the nation.

The great back story of that nickname revolves around a man with Scottish heritage who wanted his family to be remembered, so he offered to buy the school band uniforms if it went with that nickname back in the late 60s. The school corporation went ahead with it...but he never bought those uniforms. The high school never ended up starting a marching band either.

And that school was a consolidation of a couple other interesting nicknames... the Summitville Goblins and the Fairmount Quakers (James Dean played guard on their basketball team and you can Google to find a picture of him wearing the uniform)

North Dakota's politically incorrect Western Dakota Association:

    Dickinson Midgets
    Bismarck Demons
    Minot Magicians
    Mandan Braves

Plus the Bottineau Braves, and the Devils Lake Satans, Wahpeton Wops and Grand Fork Central Redskins (since changed to Knights) from eastern ND.

These are great. Only thing I have is that half of the high schools in Jefferson County, N.Y. were the Indians when I worked there in the late 1990s. No creativity.

The Midgets is very surreal to me. And I believe Minot's girls go by "Magettes," which I don't think is a real word.
